The Department is dedicated to providing sound fundamental training in all relevant fields of animal science besides providing consultancy services to all tiers of government in Nigeria.

Mission Statement

The Department is devoted to producing animal scientists capable of driving livestock production and animal products for the health and well-being of human beings within and beyond the boundaries of Nigeria.

Opportunities

The Department is increasingly branching its scope into Molecular Genetics, Genomics, and Cellular Biotechnology for animal improvement and, toxicological studies within Animal Nutrition. In addition, we are laying greater emphasis on hitherto low-key areas of presence by delivery of more specialized courses in Animal Biotechnology and Dairy and Meat Science starting from the 2020/2021 Academic Session onwards. The Department has a well-equipped laboratory for Animal Production studies and further use of a well-equipped modern University Central Laboratory for its biotechnology work. Through the University Farm (200 hectares set within the grounds of one of the largest Universities by landmark in the world (15,000 hectares). Our students gain practical experience that prepares them for direct integration into the world of work in the Animal Production industry immediately upon graduation. On the whole, the Department carries out the following:

• Teach and train students to rear and produce animals without compromising the welfare of the animals and the integrity of the environment.
• Turn out personnel who can produce high-quality and safe animal products through qualitative value addition and preservation techniques.  
• Produce animal farmers and researchers who are capable of preserving and improving the rich and diverse indigenous animal biodiversity of the country.
• Train animal scientists and lecturers who can readily impart their knowledge to students at all levels of education.
• Provide valuable highly sought practical know-how and consultancy services to the immediate university community and the nation at large
